The Blessings of Truth

Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani, who is also known as Ghous-e-Azam, was a great saint. His entire life was spent in spreading Islam. Countless people received spiritual blessings from him. Even today the world is benefiting from his teachings.

He had a great passion for learning since childhood. He got his primary education in his town Jilan but had to go to Baghdad to get higher religious education.

In those days there were no cars and motorbikes, so people used to travel on foot in the form of caravans.

So, his mother sent him along with a convoy to Baghdad. Before leaving for the journey, his mother gave him some food and forty gold coins (Asharfian) to pass the time.

His mother put these Asharfian under his shirt for safe keeping and specially advised him while walking that son: always tell the truth and never go near a lie. He listened carefully the advice of his mother and set off on his journey.

The people of caravan left for the journey in fear. They were also worried that bandits might attack the caravan on the way because the roads were unsafe in those days and bandits often looted the caravans. In the end, what was feared happened.

The caravan had just completed two stages of the journey when a group of robbers attacked them in dark of night.

There was chaos and confusion in the entire caravan and the robbers robbed the caravan members. A bandit came to Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani and said: Boy! what do you have? He replied: I have forty gold coins (Asharfian) sewn into the bottom of my shirt.

The bandit took his words as a joke and passed on laughing. Meanwhile, another robber came to him and asked the same question.

He gave the same answer again. That bandit was surprised to hear this and took him to the chief. Sardar (the leader) of bandit looked at him with surprise and asked: Boy, tell me what you have. He repeated the same thing.

Sardar was surprised to hear this. When he opened the folds of his shirt, the entire forty coins fell on the ground. Seeing gold coins, Sardar's eyes were wide open in surprise.

He addressed him and said: Boy! Why did you tell the truth and reveal your secret when you could have easily saved your coins? He replied: My mother advised me that son! Always tell the truth. I have followed my mother's advice.

Hearing his answer, Sardar was so impressed that tears came to his eyes spontaneously. He started thinking that on one hand, this is the boy who cares so much about his mother's advice and on the other hand, I am the one who neglects the commands of my real master and robs innocent people.

The veil of negligence was removed from his heart. He repented and returned the booty of the caravan. Thus, thanks to his truth, the robbers were reformed and began to lead a life of goodness and piety.
