English Story with Moral Lesson

The Wise King

Once upon a time, in a distant kingdom, there was a strange custom: each year, the people would appoint a new king. The king who ruled for that year had to pledge that, after his reign, he would leave the throne and be sent to a remote island where he would live out the rest of his days. This was an eerie tradition, for no one ever returned from that island.

After a king’s year was over, a grand farewell ceremony would take place. The king would be dressed in his finest clothes, placed on an elephant, and taken on a journey across the land to say goodbye to his people.

It was always a sorrowful occasion, as the king would bid his subjects farewell for the last time, knowing he would never return. Then, the people would leave him on the desolate island and return to their lives.

One year, as the people were leaving the old king on the island, they spotted a shipwreck in the distance. Among the wreckage was a young man clinging to a piece of wood, barely surviving.

Since the people were also in need of a new king, they rescued him and brought him to their land. They asked him to rule for a year, explaining the unusual custom. At first, the young man didn’t believe them, but after hearing their story, he agreed to take on the responsibility.

On the third day of his reign, the new king called his minister and asked, “Show me the place where all the previous kings were sent after their reigns ended.” The minister, respectful of the king’s wishes, arranged for a visit to the island.

Upon reaching the island, the king saw that it was a wild, untamed place, full of dangerous animals. The sounds of these animals echoed from the dense forest.

Curious, the king ventured further into the woods, where he was shocked to find the skeletal remains of previous kings scattered around the island. The realization hit him hard—if he didn’t act fast, he too would meet a gruesome end, torn apart by wild animals.

Determined to avoid such a fate, the king returned to the mainland and gathered a hundred strong workers. He ordered them to clear the island of its dangers.

For the next few months, the workers killed the wild animals and cut down the excess trees. By the second month, the island was almost unrecognizable, free from its previous dangers.

But the king didn’t stop there. He wanted to transform the island into a place of peace and beauty. He instructed the workers to plant gardens, and he brought animals like chickens, cows, ducks, and sheep to the island.

He also had them build a magnificent house and a harbor, so the island could one day thrive. As the months passed, the island slowly turned into a stunning, serene city.

Despite the progress, the king wore simple clothes and lived humbly. He spent most of the kingdom’s resources on improving the island. As his reign neared its end, he told his minister, “I know I must wait two more months before my time as king ends, but I am ready to go now.”

The ministers tried to convince him to wait, as tradition dictated that the king must stay for the full year, and only then would he be sent to the island.

Finally, after two months, the year ended. The people prepared for the king’s farewell. He was dressed in royal garments and placed on an elephant, just as the tradition demanded. However, to everyone’s surprise, the king seemed joyful rather than sad.

The people were puzzled. “Why are you smiling?” they asked. “All the previous kings were heartbroken, but you seem so happy.”

The young king answered with wisdom: “You see, when a child is born, it cries and the world rejoices. Live your life in such a way that when you die, you are smiling and the world cries.

I have lived that life. While all the kings before me were lost in the luxuries of the palace, I was planning for my future. I turned this island, which was once a place of despair, into a beautiful home where I will live out my days in peace.”

The people were astonished by his wisdom. In the end, the king’s foresight and hard work had not only saved his life but also turned an island of doom into a paradise. His story became a lesson in the importance of planning for the future, no matter what challenges life may present.
