Short Motivational Story in English
A Goat had eaten Two Villages
One day, while
King Shah Jahan was out hunting, he chased a wounded deer and got separated
from his companions. By noon, he found himself alone in the vast wilderness,
far from his group.
Parched with
thirst, he searched for water but couldn't find any. Just then, he noticed a
big tree offering cool shade, under which a shepherd was resting with his sheep
and goats.
The king,
dressed in hunting attire, approached the shepherd and asked for water. The
shepherd, who had already run out of water, quickly rinsed a pot with goat’s
milk and offered it to the king to drink. Shah Jahan was impressed by the
shepherd’s quick thinking and kindness.
He asked the
shepherd for a piece of paper to reward him, but the shepherd had none. Without
hesitation, the king broke off a leaf from the tree and used the tip of his
dagger to write something on it.
He handed the
leaf to the shepherd, saying, “I have granted you two villages. Go to Masjid
Delhi on Friday, and you’ll find me there.”
The shepherd,
overjoyed, returned home and placed the leaf on his blanket while he tended to
his goats. But then, one of his goats picked up the leaf, licked it, and ate
it. The shepherd was devastated.
He believed the
king had granted him two villages, and now the goat had consumed his good
fortune. He wandered around in despair, repeatedly muttering, “The goat has
eaten two villages.” He became withdrawn, refusing to eat or drink, consumed
with worry about his lost reward.
On Friday, the
shepherd made his way to Delhi. As he entered the mosque, he saw the king
praying along with the worshipers. The shepherd, still murmuring, “The goat has
eaten two villages,” suddenly shouted, “If the giver gives a lot, I will take!”
He dashed out
of the mosque, leaving everyone stunned. After the prayer, the king searched
for the shepherd but couldn’t find him.
That evening,
the shepherd sat atop an old tree in the forest, still repeating the same
words. Just then, a group of robbers approached, discussing plans to rob the
village nearby. The shepherd, hearing them, scolded them and warned, “Stealing
is wrong, and this village is poor. But I’ve heard from my elders that treasure
is buried beneath this tree. Dig here if you need money.”
Intrigued by
the shepherd’s words, the robbers began digging under the tree. To their shock,
they unearthed two pots full of snakes and scorpions. Panicked, they took the
pots and decided to throw them into the village in hopes that the creatures
would bite the villagers. However, when the pots were overturned, diamonds
spilled out instead of snakes and scorpions.
The entire
village was awakened by the sound of the precious gems hitting the ground. The
robbers, realizing their mistake, fled in fear, leaving with nothing.
The shepherd,
witnessing the miracle, shouted, “Data! You are right! You have given me great
wealth!” The next morning, the king’s servants arrived in the village and
brought the shepherd to the royal court.
The shepherd
recounted his story, but he refused to accept the king's reward. He explained,
“When you ask from the one who gives to everyone, why shouldn’t I ask too? You
see, he has given me my reward.”
Impressed by
his humility, the king honored the shepherd and sent him back to his village with
respect and honor. The shepherd’s faith in the giver, and his humble nature,
had led him to a great reward far beyond what he had ever imagined.
The story
teaches us that sometimes, the greatest rewards come not from what we expect,
but from the kindness and generosity that the universe offers in unexpected
ways.
