A Shepherd helped an English Engineer to Lay Railway Lines in Mountains

When the British came to India, they also brought machines with them. By this time, rails and other machines had been invented in Europe. The British started building railways in India. The first railway line in the Indian subcontinent was extended from Bombay to the police station. After that, tracks were laid in different parts. Laying tracks in mountainous areas was a daunting task. Engineers dug tunnels in the mountains and crossed the lines. The Quetta Line is a great example of this.

There are also high mountains between Poona and Bombay. The British engineers wanted to run a line through these mountains to connect other parts of the country with Bombay. They began to find a way to the line in these mountains. It was decided to dig tunnels in many places. There was a place in these mountains where the engineers did not understand how to move the line.

The chief engineer of railway was sitting at the foot of the hill thinking that a shepherd had come here with his goats. The engineer was very surprised to see this. The engineer talked to the shepherd and told him about his problem.

The shepherd told the engineer not to be upset and then he stood on a high place and explained to the engineer the way to lay the line.

The engineer was very pleased with his advice. His weeks of anxiety were gone. Eventually the line reached Bombay on the advice of the Shepherd. The engineer told senior railway officials that whenever future trains pass through this place, they should stop for a while and blow the whistle in memory of the herdsman (Shepherd). This was accepted by him.

This has been the case since the first train on this line. High-speed electric trains stop here for a second, whistle and depart for the next destination. This whistle is blown in memory of the kindness of this shepherd.

It also proves that advice is helpful. Sometimes even an ordinary person gives precious consultation. The reward for kindness is kindness.
