Birbal's Wisdom and 300 Gold Coins
During Emperor Akbar's reign, everyone admired
Birbal for his wisdom and intelligence. However, many ministers in the royal
court were jealous of him. Among them was one of Akbar's brothers-in-law, who
requested the emperor to remove Birbal from the position of minister and
appoint him instead.
Birbal somehow learned about this request.
Before Akbar could make any decision, Birbal voluntarily resigned from his
post.
Akbar decided to test the abilities of his new
minister. One day, he gave him 300 gold coins and said, "Spend these coins
so that 100 coins return to me in this life, 100 benefit me in the next life,
and the remaining 100 benefit me neither in this life nor in the next."
The new minister was completely confused. He
spent a sleepless night trying to solve the puzzle but failed. Seeing his
distress, his wife advised him to seek Birbal's help. Reluctantly, he visited
Birbal and explained the emperor's challenge.
Birbal smiled and said, "Give me the
coins, and I'll take care of the rest."
The next day, Birbal set out with the 300 gold
coins. On his way, he met a wealthy merchant celebrating his son's wedding.
Birbal presented him with 100 gold coins on behalf of Emperor Akbar, along with
the emperor's best wishes. Delighted by the royal gift, the merchant sent many
expensive gifts back to the emperor in return.
Next, Birbal visited a poor village. He spent
another 100 gold coins on food and clothing and distributed them among the
needy in the emperor's name.
With the remaining 100 gold coins, Birbal organized
a grand evening of music and dance, spending every last coin.
The following day, Birbal appeared in Akbar's
court and requested permission to explain how the coins had been used.
Surprised, Akbar asked how the coins had reached Birbal when they had been
entrusted to the new minister.
Birbal respectfully replied that the minister
had asked for his help. He then explained, "The 100 coins given to the
wealthy merchant have already returned to Your Majesty in the form of valuable
gifts, so they benefited you in this life. The 100 coins spent on the poor will
earn you blessings and rewards in the next life. The final 100 coins spent on
music and entertainment will benefit you neither in this world nor in the
next."
Akbar was deeply impressed by Birbal's wisdom.
The new minister realized his mistake, resigned from his position, and
requested that Birbal be restored as the emperor's chief minister.
बीरबल की बुद्धिमानी और तीन सौ स्वर्ण मुद्राएँ
सम्राट अकबर के शासनकाल में बीरबल अपनी बुद्धिमानी और चतुराई के लिए पूरे राज्य में प्रसिद्ध थे। लेकिन दरबार के कई मंत्री उनसे ईर्ष्या करते थे। उनमें अकबर का एक साला भी था, जिसने सम्राट से अनुरोध किया कि बीरबल को मंत्री पद से हटाकर उसकी नियुक्ति कर दी जाए।
बीरबल को किसी तरह इस बात का पता चल गया। अकबर के कोई निर्णय लेने से पहले ही बीरबल ने स्वयं अपने पद से इस्तीफा दे दिया।
अकबर ने नए मंत्री की परीक्षा लेने का निश्चय किया। उन्होंने उसे 300 स्वर्ण मुद्राएँ देते हुए कहा, "इनमें से 100 ऐसी खर्च करो कि उनका लाभ मुझे इसी जीवन में मिले, 100 ऐसी कि उनका फल मुझे अगले जन्म या परलोक में मिले, और बाकी 100 ऐसी खर्च करो कि उनका लाभ न इस जीवन में मिले और न ही अगले में।"
नया मंत्री यह चुनौती सुनकर घबरा गया। पूरी रात सोचता रहा, लेकिन उसे कोई उपाय नहीं सूझा। उसकी पत्नी ने उसे सलाह दी कि वह बीरबल से सहायता माँगे। मजबूरी में वह बीरबल के पास पहुँचा और सारी बात बता दी।
बीरबल मुस्कुराए और बोले, "मुझे ये मुद्राएँ दे दो, बाकी मैं संभाल लूँगा।"
अगले दिन बीरबल 300 स्वर्ण मुद्राएँ लेकर निकले। रास्ते में उन्हें एक धनी व्यापारी मिला, जो अपने पुत्र के विवाह का उत्सव मना रहा था। बीरबल ने सम्राट अकबर की ओर से उसे 100 स्वर्ण मुद्राएँ और शुभकामनाएँ भेंट कीं। व्यापारी इस सम्मान से अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुआ और उसने सम्राट के लिए अनेक मूल्यवान उपहार भेज दिए।
इसके बाद बीरबल एक गरीब बस्ती में गए। उन्होंने 100 स्वर्ण मुद्राओं से भोजन और वस्त्र खरीदे और उन्हें सम्राट के नाम पर गरीबों में बाँट दिया।
शेष 100 स्वर्ण मुद्राओं से बीरबल ने संगीत और नृत्य का एक भव्य आयोजन कराया और सारी राशि वहीं खर्च कर दी।
अगले दिन बीरबल दरबार में पहुँचे और सम्राट से पूरी बात बताने की अनुमति माँगी। अकबर ने आश्चर्य से पूछा कि ये मुद्राएँ उनके पास कैसे पहुँचीं, जबकि उन्होंने तो उन्हें नए मंत्री को दी थीं।
बीरबल ने विनम्रता से उत्तर दिया कि नया मंत्री सहायता के लिए उनके पास आया था। फिर उन्होंने समझाया, "जो 100 स्वर्ण मुद्राएँ व्यापारी को दी गईं, वे मूल्यवान उपहारों के रूप में आपको इसी जीवन में वापस मिल गईं। जो 100 गरीबों पर खर्च की गईं, उनका पुण्य आपको परलोक में मिलेगा। और जो अंतिम 100 संगीत और नृत्य पर खर्च हुईं, उनका लाभ आपको न इस जीवन में मिलेगा और न ही अगले में।"
अकबर बीरबल की बुद्धिमानी से अत्यंत प्रभावित हुए। नए मंत्री को अपनी भूल का एहसास हुआ। उसने तुरंत अपना पद छोड़ दिया और बीरबल को फिर से मुख्य मंत्री नियुक्त करने का अनुरोध किया।
