Bahlol Dana Taught Junaid Baghdadi 'The Manners of Eating, Talking and Sleeping'
It is said that once Sheikh Junaid left for Baghdad with the intention of
traveling to Baghdad. Some of Hazrat Sheikh's disciples were with him. The
Sheikh asked the disciples: Do you know about Bahlol Dana?
People said: Hazrat! He is a madman. What will you do with him? Sheikh
replied: Just look for Bahlol, I have to meet him.
The disciples considered it a blessing to obey the Sheikh's order. After a
short search, they found Bahlol in a desert and took the Sheikh with them.
Sheikh went in front of Bahlol and saw that Bahlol was lying with a brick under
his head. When the Sheikh greeted him, Bahlol replied: "Who are you?"
I am Junaid Baghdadi.
So, O Abul Qasim! Are you the Sheikh Baghdadi who teaches people the words
of the elders?
Yes, I try.
Well, you know how to eat?
Why not, I recite Bismillah and eat what is in front of me, make a small
snack, chew slowly, do not look at the snacks of others and do not forget the
remembrance of Allah while eating.
Then he said again: Whatever bite I eat, I say Alhamdulillah. I wash my
hands before I start eating and after I finish.
Hearing this, Bahlol stood up and shook his hand towards Sheikh Junaid.
Then he said to him: You want to be the Pir Murshid of human beings and at
present you do not even know how to eat and drink.
After saying this Bahlol went his way. The disciples of the Sheikh said: O
Hazrat! This man is crazy.
Yes! He is crazy, but he also cuts off the ears of the smart ones for his
work. I should hear the truth. Come on, follow him. I want to meet him again.
Bahlol reached a desert and sat down. When Sheikh Baghdadi approached him,
he asked him again: Who are you?
I am Baghdadi Sheikh! Who doesn't know how to eat!
Bahlol said: Well, if you are unfamiliar with the etiquette of eating, then
you must know how to communicate?
The Sheikh replied: Yes, I know.
So tell me, how do you talk?
I do everything according to an estimate. Not to be outdone and unaccounted
for, I draw the attention of God's people to the commands of Allah and His
Messenger by assessing the understanding of the listeners. I don't want to say
things that make people hate me. I keep an eye on the inner and outer sciences.
He also mentioned some other things related to the etiquette of conversation.
Bahlol said: Eating habits aside. You don't even know how to talk. Then he
turned away from the sheikh and walked away. The disciples did not remain
silent. They said: O Hazrat! This person is crazy. What do you expect from a
madman?
Brothers! I want to meet him again. You people do not understand. After
that, Sheikh followed Bahlol again. Bahlol turned around and said: You do not
know the manners of eating and talking, you know the way to sleep?
The Sheikh said: Yes! I know.
Tell me, how do you sleep?
When I finish Isha prayers and Durood and Wazaif, I go to the bedroom.
Saying this, the Sheikh described the manners of sleeping which he had acquired
from the teachings of the elders of religion.
Bahlol said: It turned out that you do not even know the etiquette of
sleeping. Saying this, Bahlol wanted to go, so Hazrat Junaid Baghdadi grabbed
his foot and said: O Hazrat! I do not know. Teach me for God's sake.
After a while, Bahlol said: O Man! All these things that you have said are
later. Listen to me; the real way to eat is to have halal food first. If haram
is mixed in the food, then the etiquette you have described will not be of any
use and the heart will become dark instead of bright.
Sheikh Junaid said without any pretense: Jazak Allah o Khairan. (God bless
you).
Then Bahlol said: When talking, first of all it is necessary to have a pure
heart and a clear intention and also to keep in mind that whatever is said
should be for the pleasure of Allah. If there is any purpose or attachment to
worldly meaning or nonsense, no matter how good the words may be, it will
become a nightmare for you, so silence is better than such words.
Then he said about asleep. Similarly, what you said about sleeping is not
the real purpose. The fact is that when you go to sleep, your heart is free
from hatred, envy and jealousy. Do not have the love of the world and the
wealth of the world in your heart and keep on remembering Allah till you fall
asleep.
As soon as Bahlol's speech was over, Hazrat Junaid Baghdadi kissed his
hands and prayed for him. Sheikh Junaid's followers were shocked to see this
scene. He realized his mistake and realized that everyone should not be ashamed
to learn what he did not know.
The greatest lesson to be learned from this conversation between Hazrat Junaid and Bahlol is knowing that we know a lot, even if we do not know anything, is very harmful. This closes the way to reform and development and leaves man in misguidance.
