How to Remove Rust From the Heart?
An elderly,
pious man lived in a humble hut by the riverbank, far removed from the hustle
of the world. One day, a young man came seeking wisdom and truth. He approached
the old man and asked, “O Father, tell me, how does reading the Qur'an rust the
heart when we do not understand it?”
The old man,
deep in contemplation, did not respond. The young man, eager for an answer,
repeated the question. After a third attempt, the old man replied with a hint
of boredom.
Though the
young man didn’t fully understand the response, he respected the elder too much
to press further. He quietly took a bucket and went down to the river. The
bucket was shiny on the outside but blackened inside from the coals it had
carried before.
As the young
man filled the bucket with water and began to walk back, he suddenly noticed
that water was leaking from the holes in the bucket. By the time he reached the
hut, most of the water had flowed out.
He entered and
shared the story with the old man, who simply told him to go back and try
again. The young man, now starting to believe there was some wisdom in the old
man’s words, went back to the river with the bucket.
Once again,
water leaked from the bucket as he walked toward the hut. When he returned, the
old man merely advised him to try again.
The young man,
now exhausted, finally said, “O Father, I don’t understand. You see that the
bucket is empty. Why do you keep asking me to do this?” The old man smiled
kindly and said, “Look at the inside of the bucket. Is it still as black as it
was the first time?”
The young man
glanced at the bucket and noticed a change. It was no longer black inside; the
water had cleaned it.
The old man
nodded and explained, “The water may not have stayed in the bucket, but its
quality has cleansed it. Just like the Qur'an. Keep reading it, again and
again. Its purity will gradually clean your heart, removing the rust and
worldly distractions. Though you may not see immediate change, over time, your
heart will become pure, and it will connect you with Allah.”
That, the old
man said, was the answer to the young man's question.
